Hired into the Rollins Epidemiology Fellows Program, fellows serve as early-career MPH-level epidemiologists for a two-year term within one of Georgia’s 18 local health districts or at the Georgia Department of Public Health. This position is not located at Emory, but rather at District 1-2 in Dalton, GA. Up to 2 – 3 days / week of remote work is a possibility, negotiated with the health district supervisor.

Under supervision at the health district, day-to-day activities of the fellows include, but are not limited to: planning, developing, and conducting epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, outreach and interventions limited in scope and/or complexity to determine the causes of diseases and implementing methods of disease control. Competency Achievement Plan

To successfully complete and graduate from the Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship, fellows are minimally expected to complete an oral presentation, a surveillance evaluation/quality improvement project, and a significant data analysis project over the course of the two years. Fellows are expected to work on projects and activities related to seven Core Competencies:

  • Data Analytics and Assessment
  • Public Health Sciences
  • Communication
  • Health Equity
  • Community Partnership
  • Policy Development and Program Planning
  • Leadership and Systems Thinking

Example projects

  1. County Board of Health Quarterly Reports: The fellow will develop quarterly reports for County Board of Health meetings that provide community leaders with clear and timely insights into current infectious disease trends and other relevant public health data such as overdose trends and current use of prevention measures. This project would include both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The fellow would be able to utilize data from the statewide surveillance system, national databases, and even community surveys to capture the complete situation.
  2. Evaluate and Enhance Outbreak and Cluster Reporting Framework: The fellow will work to enhance the existing framework for outbreak and cluster reporting for diseases such as STIs and enteric infections to strengthen disease surveillance, promote health equity and support timely public health response. The current surveillance system is at risk of missing true outbreaks that occur over long periods but not rapidly enough to be flagged by surveillance programs, a common challenge in rural areas. The fellow will conduct monthly analyses of surveillance data and develop reports that illustrate the situation, inform prevention strategies, guide targeted interventions, and support data-driven policy and decision-making. Metrics such as moving quarterly averages and five year trends would be helpful in this project and the use of SAS and ArcGIS to analyze both quantitative and geospatial aspects of district morbidities would be highly important.
  3. Community Health Education and Partnerships: In the past year, District 1-2 has began monthly educational courses in collaboration with community-based organizations which work to rehabilitate individuals with substance use disorders. The epidemiology team has been able to provide vital health resources to aid in this mission. The district like to expand our educational reach by finding additional organizations whose missions align with those of the district to improve health for all individuals. This initiative would offer a lot of opportunities for creativity for the fellow in their efforts to tailor educational materials and initiatives to the specific audience needs.
